Lip seals, also known as rotary shaft seals or radial shaft seals, are used to prevent the leakage of fluids (like oil or grease) and to keep contaminants (like dirt or water) from entering the machinery. They are commonly found in automotive, industrial, and manufacturing applications.

Lip Seals Typically Contain:

1. Elastomeric Lip (Sealing Element):

   • Made from materials like Nitrile Rubber (NBR), Fluoroelastomer (FKM/Viton), Silicone, EPDM, or PTFE.

   • Provides the actual sealing function against the shaft surface.

2. Metal Case / Outer Shell:

   • Often made from carbon steel or stainless steel.

   • Provides structural support and helps press-fit the seal into the housing.

3. Spring (Garter Spring):

   • A small, circular tension spring (usually made of stainless steel or carbon steel) that reinforces the sealing lip and maintains consistent contact with the rotating shaft.

4. Secondary Lip / Dust Lip (optional):

   • Some seals have a secondary lip that helps exclude dirt and contaminants.

5. Coatings or Adhesives (optional):

   • The outer diameter may be coated with materials like rubber or sealant for better sealing in the bore.
